Action explosion

Liberal Democrat councillors on Surrey County Council work hard to achieve the best for the people of Surrey.

During the last four years the Liberal Democrat councillors on Surrey County Council have worked hard to achieve the best for the people of Surrey. Of their many initiatives and achievements, the main ones are listed below:

  • led a campaign to improve the condition of the roads and footways.

  • opposed bus cuts and sought a review of transport provision which led to the proposal to set up a transport co-ordination centre.

  • campaigned to retain the right to free school transport, under threat by the Government.

  • successfully arranged local funding of activities and improved facilities for young people.

  • pressed for a waste policy with strong action on waste reduction and recycling.

  • pressed for the introduction of invest-to-save initiatives such as increasing allowances for foster parents to reduce high spending on out of County placements and a scheme to help key Council employees to buy their own homes.

  • successfully shamed the Conservative administration into increasing funding to improve disabled access to County Council buildings.

  • requested an increased role for Local Committees to allow more decisions to be made locally.

  • demanded a thorough review of Council spending.

  • called for better monitoring of Council contracts worth millions of pounds.

  • highlighted the need to reduce the millions of pounds spent by the Council on consultants.

  • successfully obtained the introduction of an energy efficiency policy with a view to saving hundred of thousands of pounds a year in energy bills.
