The Conservative administration does not have any effective plans to improve the condition of Surrey's main roads.

Surrey County Council's poor performance in the delivery of some of its key services, compared to other councils, was highlighted today by the Liberal Democrats. Of particular concern is its poor performance in improving the condition of the roads. According to recent Government figures nearly 40% of Surrey's main roads were in need of repair last year.

Councillor Hazel Watson, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Surrey County Council, said: "In 2003/2004 Surrey County Council was one of the worst performing councils in maintaining its main roads in a reasonable state of repair. The Conservative administration clearly does not have any effective plans to improve the condition of its main roads, because it has agreed an unambitious target for this year of only reducing the number of main roads where structural maintenance should be considered to 38.6%."

"This is just one example of how the current administration at County Hall is failing Surrey residents by not improving services where it is urgently needed" she concluded.
